What is a gooseneck trailer?
Pretty much any trailer attaches to the rear bumper of a vehicle. However, Gooseneck trailers differ in that they have a long neck which can attach to the bed of a pickup truck - hence the name "gooseneck."
There are different types of gooseneck trailers - including flatbeds, livestock, equipment, and bale trailers.
What are the advantages of a gooseneck trailer?
- Stability: The weight of the hitch is over a truck’s rear axle rather than the bumper. With this being the case, there’s less potential for the trailer to sway back and forth. It also means goosenecks can carry more weight - gooseneck trailers can carry up to 30,000 pounds.
- SManeuverability: Since gooseneck trailers are so close to the truck, drivers are able to make sharper turns, allowing the driver to get into tighter spaces.
What are the disadvantages of a gooseneck trailer?
- Storage: Since Goosenecks are generally larger than bumper pulls, finding a space to store them can be more difficult.
- Installing the hitch: Most trucks don’t come with a gooseneck hitch, so it will usually need to be installed, leading to more time and money.
How to attach a gooseneck trailer?
While Goosenecks come in different sizes and classification levels, all gooseneck trailers require a similar installation process. Before you start the process, the first order of business is installing a unique gooseneck trailer mount in your truck bed if you don’t have one already.
Hook up you gooseneck trailer by following these steps:
- Raise the trailer height - The first step is raising the trailer above the truck bed, using the jack.
- Back the truck up - Back up your truck so it’s aligned directly with the ball hitch with the coupler. Make sure the trailer is unlatched and in the open position.
- Lower the trailer - Lower the trailer on to the ball hitch, secure the jack handle, and secure the jack foot into the upper position by releasing the pin.
- Secure the breakaway cable - Climb into the truck bed and connect the breakaway cable to a secure point on the trailer hitch system.
- Connect safety chains - Attach the safety chains to either the U-Bolts or D-rings on the trailer’s hitch.
- Secure the coupler - Close the coupler and latch the safety pin.
- Plug into receptacle - Find your receptacle and hook up the 7-way plug. A lot of trucks have the receptacle hooked up to the side of the truck bed.
- Safety inspection - Close the tailgate, and walk around your trailer. Check the brake lights, marker lights, and turn signals. If everything is good, you’re ready to start pulling the trailer.
