Types of Dump Trucks Available
Standard Dump Truck
These are the most common Dump Truck variant which has an open-box bed that has a rear hinge that can be lifted with hydraulic pistons to dump the materials it is carrying. These trucks are common in the construction, mining, and agriculture industries to haul dirt, rocks, crops, and debris.
Articulated Dump Truck
Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs) are used to transport large volumes of materials and are typically large, heavy-duty off-road vehicles. They are given their name because of their articulation joint which allows them to navigate uneven terrain or narrow paths because their front and rear sections are able to move independently.
ADTs are available in multiple sizes and capacities (Some are able to carry 40 tons) and are typically used in the construction and mining industries. In most cases, they are moving materials like gravel, rocks, and sand - In the agricultural industry they hull crops or other farm supplies.
Transfer Dump Truck
These are also known as transfer trucks, but are dump trucks that have a separate trailer that attaches to the truck’s bed. The Transfer Dump Truck’s trailer is able to be lifted and tilted with the use of hydraulic rams to dump the materials out of the trailer. Transfer dump trucks are typically used in the construction and mining industries as well as for waste management since they can carry larger volumes of material with the extra trailer.
Side Dump Truck
Side Dump Trucks are a heavy-duty truck designed to unload materials by tilting the bed of the truck to the side which allows the materials to slide out. These trucks are typically used for construction, mining, and agriculture work. The main benefit of side dump trucks is that they can be unloaded quickly.
Single Axle Dump Truck
It’s in the name - Single Axle Dump Trucks are just that. Dump trucks that have a single axle and are usually used in construction, agriculture, and landscaping work. They are great for towing gravel, sand, dirt, and mulch and have a bed that has a hydraulic system to lift the bed in order to empty its cargo. These are small to medium sized dump trucks which provide a more cost-effective option for hauling materials.
Tandem Axle Dump Truck
Tandem Axle Dump Trucks are versatile vehicles which are designed with two axles (One in the front and one in the rear) and hydraulic lifts that raise the bed to dump loose materials out the back. Tandem axle dump trucks are used in the construction, mining, and landscaping industries.
Tri Axle & Quad Axle Dump Truck
Also as the names suggest, these dump trucks have three or 4 axles. Tri Axle Dump Trucks have one axle in the front and 2 in the rear which provide extra stability and cargo weight capacity. Quad Axle Dump Trucks are similar, but instead have one axle in the front and 3 in the rear which provides even more stability and weight capacity than the Tri Axle Dump Trucks. Both of these trucks have hydraulic systems common in all types of dump trucks which are used to empty their cargo.
