Forty years ago Larry Phelps purchased the former Rewerts Implement in Grundy Center and began his family-owned implement business. Today the business has expanded to include four communities and represents a John Deere dealership that is one of the largest in the state of Iowa.
Randy Phelps and son-in-law Randy Runge joined into the business and have over 30 years of service. Phelps is aftermarket manager, while Runge is general manager.
According to Runge, the family purchased a repair shop in Greene and turned it into a John Deere dealership in 1996. In 2003, the existing John Deere dealership in Hampton was purchased by the Phelps family. In 2010, the Hubbard location was added to the Phelps Implement roster.
Currently more than 100 people are employed by the Phelps operation at the four locations. One area of business that has grown the last five years is that of Ag Management Solutions technology. The firm employs four tech specialists, in addition to employees specializing in sales, customer support and parts.
When asked for the keys to success, Randy Runge touted his service department by saying, “Anyone can sell, but being able to follow up after the sale is what makes a strong dealership. We try to always live up to our motto: Our Service Makes the Difference!”
