This differential (relative) speed helps tear, crack, or shatter stalks, rather than simply slicing them uniformly. There are rotary knives that are adjustable, allowing the user to change how the stalks are processed: either more “sliced” or more “linked” (i.e. leaving longer sections of stalk tied together) depending on what residue management goal you have. Improved stalk pull-down (i.e. ensuring stalks are pulled close to ground, reducing loose stalks sticking up).
